Adapting in 2023: Poems about Near Dark, the Contrast is Stark - Victoria Fox

It’s Dark, He Needs to Not Park

The car scene from the perspective of Mae

By: Victoria Fox

While the headlights shine bright on the road ahead,

If Caleb does not hurry up, I will soon be dead.

The sun is rapidly rising,

“I’m in a rush” is something I need to start emphasizing.

I ask how many miles more

Only for him to be unsure.

Caleb wants to know what rush I am in,

He thinks my dad is going to question where I’ve been.

Little does he know that is far from the case

As he suggests, my excuse can be the car was stuck in place.

I need him to step on the gas,

Yet he slows down, what a jackass!

Even with my begs and pleads,

He does not pick up on my dire needs.

He thinks it’s funny to park the car,

With only my lips on his radar.

He proceeds to put the keys down his shirt,

the selfishness is so overt.

He says, “I am going to need to kiss him first,”

His blood, I just may have to thirst.

He says he is not asking for much,

But he doesn’t know what happens when my skin and the sun touch.

I look down at his lips, giving me a manipulative grin,

I can not help but go in.

I am scared and annoyed,

Yet he is still filling my love void,

Thus, a make-out session commences,

Little does he know at what expenses.

My lips somehow move down to his neck,

All I can think is that it is the perfect time to peck.

A few more kisses to make him unsuspecting

Of the blood, I am about to be injecting.

Crunch!

The deed is done,

I need to get on the run.
His blood still dripping down my mouth,

I open the door and leave, running south.

It’s Dark, On an Adventure I want to Embark

The car scene from the perspective of Caleb

By: Victoria Fox

Driving through these quiet, dark roads,

You think the fun would be coming in loads!

I got a pretty girl to my right,

Yet all she wants to do is fight.

She is nagging about the time,

Is wanting to hang out a crime?

I told her not to worry about her daddy’s wrath

As I would say, an obstacle was in our path.

What better excuse than the car broke down

In the middle of a ghost town.

He will understand for sure,

But she is opposed to this lure.

All I want is a simple kiss,

This is an opportunity I don’t want to miss.

I decided to stop the car and propose a deal,

I will drive her home, if said kisses, I could steal.

I tuck my key away in my shirt

And say, “I ain’t asking for much” as a flirt.

I reach my hand forward with an inviting smile,

Hoping that this will last a long while.

She comes closer, I am getting excited,

Soon, our lips are united.

The passion in her touch

Gives me such a rush.

I knew this felt right,

She has nothing to fright.

She wraps her hands seductively around my neck,

Ow, what in the world was that peck?

I can feel my nose scrunch.

After hearing that crunch.

Next thing I know, she pulls away,

And she is soon running off into the gray.

I can feel the blood, yet I still open my door,

Running after her as she is someone I adore.

I shout “hey” twice, hoping she will stop,

Yet she kept going, making my attempt a flop.

Footnote: These poems are meant to showcase the inner dialogues of each of the characters, showing the varying perspectives on this dramatic and monumental scene in Near Dark. The film focused a lot on plot development thus, this is intended to provide more character development. This scene also adapted a different means of storytelling, using more language and descriptions as opposed to acting and sound effects. The rhyme scheme of every two lines creates a fast-paced rhythm paralleling a rapid or nervous heartbeat, something both characters have in this scene, for different reasons.
